5 Ways to Make WordPress SEO Friendly

As WordPress website developers, we are often asked how best to make WordPress website SEO friendly. Here are 5 key things that you need to consider.

1. Use Short Permalinks That Include Keywords

Permalinks refer to how your website address (URL) is displayed. By default, WordPress site permalinks look like this:

http://your-site.com/page-id?967

This doesn’t make much sense to search engines (or humans) trying to understand what the page is about. You should use simple language that includes your keywords:

http://your-site.com/page-topic-here

2. Use Search Engine Optimised Themes

Some WordPress themes use lots of code and large images to create the site’s design. The longer your page takes to load and the longer the source code, the more work search engines have to do to understand and rank your content.

Choosing a fast performing theme is good for your position in search engine results pages as it’s one of the criteria that search engines (including Google) use to determine your ranking.

3. Use an SEO Plugin

Out of the box, WordPress doesn’t give you much control over the on-page SEO elements that you need to ensure that your site ranks well in search engine results and for links to your site to be presented well on social media channels.

We strongly recommend using the Yoast SEO plugin to help control on-page SEO elements. The main Yoast SEO plugin also helps to guide you to make changes to your web pages that will help from an SEO perspective but it’s still up you to make those changes and set up your on-page SEO elements correctly.

As well as allowing you to control on-page SEO elements, the Yoast SEO plugin also allows you to create social media tags including Facebook Open Graph and Twitter Card markup which determine how your content is displayed when it’s shared on social media channels.

4. Use Good File Names

When uploading images and other media, use file names that incorporate your main keywords. As part of your standard on-page SEO you should be using image alt tags as standard.

5. Content Remains King

Engaging, relevant, shareable, unique content that solves visitors problems is still one of the most important factors that will help your website to rank well in the SERPs.
